Unfogging the Fan Theories: “Crimes of Grindelwald” Edition

Since the announcement of the Fantastic Beasts film series, fans everywhere have been diving in trying to make any and all possible connections to the Harry Potter series. Some of the theories have been proven correct, and some of them are a bit more… unconventional. The strangest ones I’ve come across so far have dealt with people trying to prove Fantastic Beasts characters could be parents of characters in the Potter series.

Let’s begin with one of the more outlandish theories I’ve heard: Queenie Goldstein is Voldemort’s mother.

Yeah. You read that right. There is a theory floating around that Queenie is Voldemort’s mother. Where do I even begin on this? Let’s start with the facts that we already know.

Thomas Marvolo Riddle was born on December 31, 1926, in England. His mother, Merope (Gaunt) Riddle, died in childbirth. The first time we meet Queenie is in late 1926 in New York City, New York, very much not pregnant. None of it adds up, so…

Keeping with the theme of “Who is Voldemort’s mother?” (again, see above, it’s Merope Gaunt), there is also a theory that Nagini is Voldemort’s mother. Yep. The snake lady is somehow the Dark Lord’s mother. Again, the timing really doesn’t work. In Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, we meet Nagini at a circus in 1927. I’m becoming repetitive here, but as I already stated, Voldemort’s. Mother. Is. Merope. Gaunt. Merope died in 1926.

People are trying to say that Merope faked her death, changed her name, and moved, but boy, that sure is a reach. Here’s what I think of this theory:

Not only are people trying to tie Fantastic Beasts characters to Lord Voldemort’s mother, but there are also theories about his father as well.

Number one: Credence is Voldemort’s father.

Do I even have to say it? Thomas Riddle, Sr., a Muggle from England, is Voldemort’s father. Credence is not a Muggle and does not live in England. Case closed.

While people have been coming around to understanding that there is no way Credence could be Voldemort’s father, another ever-so-slightly more believable theory popped up: that Credence could be Snape’s grandfather.

We don’t have as much information readily available about Snape’s lineage as we do of Lord Voldemort’s, so that could potentially be a reason that people latched onto this theory. One of the main reasons people think this could be a possibility is because they both have dark hair and sharp features. That’s hardly solid information to base a theory on.

We do know that Snape’s father, Tobias Snape, was a Muggle who married a pure-blood witch, Eileen Prince. But again, Credence is not a Muggle, and there is no evidence stating that Tobias Snape was a Squib. My thoughts?

I completely understand wanting to find ties from the Fantastic Beasts story with the Harry Potter story. But before you go posting some frankly out-there theories that cause misinformation to be spread, maybe do a bit of research.
